Study tips! c: ON Monday, March 11, 2013 AT 5:43 PM
Hello ~
After two years of interest, and one year of serious, dedicated studying, I've come to the conclusion that there's things that makes it all so much easier. Small details that will keep your motivation up! ^^
Believe me, I've had my fair share of "
why am I doing this?" and "
let's just give up"-moments since I started studying Japanese, and some of them took a longer time to get through than others. I've been depressed about how slow I'm learning, and about how quick I'm forgetting.
But my view on all of that has changed with time, but I got an especially motivating push in the right direction recently. So that's why I thought I'd make a quick list of things that have made my own learning easier! Maybe not as much for this blog as for myself. I can't wait until the time when I look back at this and think "yeah, that's how I was back then."
This is something that I still have to learn, and it's the reason behind 90% of all of my "depression phases" so far. I overestimate my stamina and will, and try to study 4-5 hours a day which simply isn't possible for someone like me. I've come to the conclusion that my limit is somewhere around 2 hours, after that I'm just forcing myself. So never overdo it, no matter how optimistic you feel. Find your own "limit" and stick to that. The moment you're forcing yourself, you're going to lose all of your motivation.
You're going to have to find some sort of balance when it comes to studying. You can't do it all the time, but you can't do too little either. When you've gone for a longer period without studying, you won't feel like starting again. And plus, you will forget tons of things. Don't ever let it go too long without repetition.
Details. Use a cuter pen, a nice notebook. Drink or eat something while you study, like chocolate or a cup of tea. Whatever makes you think of studying as something pleasant ^^
A pen I use sometimes! c: it's cute, right? Makes everything more fun ~
- Find your own source of motivation.
I've got lots. There's a special youtuber that always vlogs in Japanese, and her videos gives me huge motivation boosts. I have YesJapan and George Trombley, and I've got a "study map" on my wall where I put 2 X's if I've studied for 30 minutes that day. I have plans of blogging in Japanese, and maybe even vlogging, and all of the things I've mentioned are things that gives me motivation.
- Surround yourself with what you're studying.
Post-its, pictures, music, posters, anything. Follow Youtubers, change your computer/phone/iPad/iPod to Japanese, whatever makes you see it a lot. You'll naturally pick up on words and phrases, and it'll make your studying easier! c:
It doesn't matter how much time it takes, you'll get there eventually.
Why do you want to study and what do you want to achieve? Make sure you know the answer to that before getting started. My goal is obviously to finally get to move to Japan, but it's easier if you have smaller goals on the way. Currently my goal is to start blogging in Japanese!
Drinking tea or glögg is one of my favorites~
All of the tips and advice listed above are just things that makes it easier for me, I'm not saying it will necessarily help you. There's things I've read from other people, and things that I've found out myself, but either way, it might be of some help to you ^^
